A tragic episode of gun violence unfolded in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, where a 49-year-old woman was left critically injured after being shot in the head. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. today at the junction of Walnut Street and East Liberty Street. According to Local 12, the victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries; however, no suspect information has been disclosed at this time.
Compounding the urgency, an officer stationed nearby heard the shots and responded to the scene, where ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection system, also registered multiple gunshots, as detailed by FOX19 NOW. Descriptions from the night chief, Captain Stephen Bower, suggested that the suspect was a male dressed in a ski mask and black hoody who allegedly opened fire from a Shell gas station parking lot and then fled "in an unknown way"; the police department is actively seeking information from the public to aid in their investigation.
This stark and violent act did not occur in isolation. This shooting marks the continuation of a disturbing trend in Over-the-Rhine, indicating it’s the second day in a row where someone has been critically assaulted in the neighborhood. The wounded woman, now fighting for her life at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, was accompanied by two witnesses at the time of the shooting, one of whom was her daughter, according to insights provided by WLWT.
With the suspect remaining at large, residents are urged to report any information they may have by contacting the police at 513-352-3542.
