A teenager has been charged in Spring Hill, Tennessee, following last Friday's shooting that left a one-year-old girl injured. The 17-year-old from Columbia is facing multiple charges, including attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, according to NewsChannel 5.
The incident occurred in the Harvest Point subdivision, where the Spring Hill Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at around 12:55 a.m.; upon their arrival, officers found that a baby had been struck in the head by a bullet that was fired from outside into the home, and although they do not believe the baby was the intended target of the shooting, WSMV reports that the infant suffered a scalp laceration, a fractured skull, and a brain bleed was taken to the hospital and was reported stable.
The sequence of events unfolded when a pedestrian and another individual in a sedan engaged in an exchange of gunfire on Shandor Street, resulting in up to fifteen rounds being fired, with one entering the home where the young victim was sleeping per WKRN. The police are still investigating the motives behind the altercation, and security footage from the area is assisting them in piecing together the incident.
As the juvenile courts contemplate whether to move the case to adult court, the community has organized support for the child's family, creating a meal train for donating meals and money, which can be accessed through a link provided by WKRN's coverage of the incident, while police maintain deep concern, expressing through a statement obtained by NewsChannel 5 "Our thoughts remain with the child and their family. We are all hoping for a full and swift recovery."
