A fire erupted before 6pm yesterday, causing damage to two homes on Chestnut Street in Columbus, Indiana. Columbus Firefighters responded swiftly to the situation, according to a social media post from the fire department. Despite the severity of the blaze, there were no casualties reported, and currently, the cause is under investigation.
Residents in the vicinity of the 900 block of Chestnut St had to quickly make way for emergency services as Columbus Police Department and Columbus Township Fire & Rescue, along with CRH EMS and Bartholomew County EOC, arrived to assist at the scene. The effort to extinguish the fire was collaborative, but it left two families without homes to return to. The American Red Cross is stepping in to provide the much-needed support to these families now forced to rebuild their lives amidst the char and ash of what once was.
Details concerning the fire remain scant as investigators comb through evidence to piece together to rapidly respond and determine a cause. "Two homes were damaged as a result of the fire and investigators are working to determine a cause," the Columbus Fire Department stated.
The response from the community and the aid supplied by organizations such as the American Red Cross are critical during such times of crisis. "The American Red Cross is providing assistance to two families displaced by the fire," the fire department's post read.
