A San Mateo Police officer initiated a proactive traffic stop Last Friday that resulted in the arrest of a convicted felon after a foot chase. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM, when police stopped a vehicle based on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant linked to the registered owner, according to a report from the San Mateo Police Department.
A passenger in the vehicle, identified as Jose Garciabarron, 38, attempted to flee the scene on foot, eliciting a response from officers who pursued him. Garciabarron was seen holding a satchel as he ran, and officers were concerned he might be accessing a weapon. The situation escalated, prompting one of the officers to deploy his Taser after Garciabarron ignored several commands to stop. Garciabarron's attempt to dispose of the satchel during the pursuit proved futile and, after a second Taser deployment, Garciabarron was apprehended.
Upon retrieval and search of the satchel, law enforcement found a loaded Glock pistol with a round in the chamber and a drum magazine containing 36 rounds. The weapon was discovered to have been stolen from Pike County. A subsequent records check confirmed that Garciabarron was a convicted felon with two outstanding warrants. After receiving medical attention, he was transported to the San Mateo County Jail and booked on several charges.
The charges against Garciabarron include felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a concealed firearm with prior felony, possession of a loaded firearm with prior felony, possession of a firearm with prior misdemeanor convictions, prohibited person in possession of ammunition, resisting an officer, and possession of stolen property.
