David Byrne, the iconic musician known for his tenure with Talking Heads, is once again making waves in the music scene with his upcoming solo album "Who is the Sky?". As noted by Boston.com, the artist announced his new endeavor today, which is set for a September 5 release. Fans in Boston can look forward to experiencing his artistry live on October 3 and 4 at the Boch Center Wang Theatre, with tickets going on sale today.
The album will feature contributions from eclectic artists, including St. Vincent and Paramore's Hayley Williams, bringing a unique blend of sounds to Byrne's new project. This creative ensemble extends to the arrangement of the tracks, carried out by the Ghost Train Orchestra, as detailed in a report by Pitchfork. Byrne, who continues to push the boundaries of his musical journey, has also shared a visual treat for the lead single "Everybody Laughs", directed by Gabriel Barcia-Colombo. Capturing the attentions of fans across the globe, this tour promises to extend well into the next year, with legs in North America, Australasia, and Europe.
The album's lead producer, Kid Harpoon, has worked with a wide array of luminaries from Harry Styles to Rihanna. On working with Byrne, Kid Harpoon shared with Boston.com, "It took me a second to realize, oh yeah, these songs are personal, but with David’s unique perspective on life in general," demonstrating his recognition of Byrne's distinct approach to music and life's absurdities.
With a kickoff in September, Byrne is scheduled to bring his energetic and boundary-pushing performance across various cities. His backing band, composed of 13 musicians, singers, and dancers, includes members from the American Utopia band. In the statement obtained by Pitchfork, Byrne's reflective nature on communal human experiences shines through, "I suppose I do that to give an anthropological view of life in New York as we know it."
The anticipation for Byrne's return to the stage and his continuing evolution as a solo artist after "American Utopia" seems to be at an all-time high and will surely attract fans who have followed him from his Talking Heads origins to his present artistic endeavors. With his first solo album since 2018 on the horizon and a global tour underway, David Byrne remains a compelling thread in the fabric of contemporary music.
