Matthew L. Ray, a 44-year-old man from Dyersburg, has been arrested for attempting to sell a trailer that did not exist to multiple people. At least one person was scammed. He is charged with theft over $1,000 and is being held on a $75,000 bond, as per WREG.
Ray used a photo of a 16-foot Big Tex trailer listed by Wright Trailers in Massachusetts, priced at $8,595. He was not connected to the listing but received $2,500 from a businessman in Newbern on June 13, promising to deliver the trailer by last Tuesday. When the trailer was not delivered, the victim contacted authorities. This led to an investigation and Ray's arrest, as reported by the Dyer County Sheriff's Office.
According to the Dyer County Sheriff's Office on their Facebook page, Ray may be connected to several fraud cases, and they are asking anyone who paid for items but did not receive them to contact law enforcement. Ray is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on July 3. The Sheriff's Office is also asking other possible victims to call (731) 285-2802 to help with the investigation.
