In a concerning case of animal cruelty, authorities have intervened to rescue several animals from a property in El Paso County. According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the operation unfolded on June 16, after reports of animal welfare concerns came to light.
An initial investigation revealed that the property had been the subject of multiple prior complaints. The ailing conditions had spilled into the community of Midway Ranch, manifesting in the neglect of numerous animals. Collaborating with the Colorado Department of Agriculture, the Sheriff's Office obtained a search warrant to inspect the property further.
Upon the execution of the warrant, an assortment of animals were found in dire straits. Investigators discovered pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, and other farm animals deprived of necessary sustenance. The on-site veterinarian's assessment led to the seizure of 2 pigs, 4 goats, 3 sheep, 4 rabbits, 1 dog, 2 turkeys, 6 ducks, 6 quail, and over 20 chickens. Not all animals required immediate removal; those left behind received care instructions from the veterinarian to ensure their welfare.
The owners of the animals, Carlos J. Perez Morales, 28, and Clara Torres, 46, now face criminal charges with multiple counts of animal cruelty. They were required to upgrade their animal care to appropriate standards within 10 days, a deadline enforced by the authorities. If noncompliance persists, additional seizures are on the table.
