An officer-involved shooting occurred late last night at the Smurfit Westrock El Paso Container Plant, where a man identified as Paul Ivan Gonzalez opened fire in the parking lot. The El Paso Police Department reported that officers were called to the scene at 11:24 P.M. on June 23rd after receiving reports of a man with a gun. Upon their arrival, they encountered several employees who had evacuated the area and soon located Gonzalez in the parking lot where the shooting unfolded.
Following the confrontation, it was determined by the authorities that Gonzalez had shot an employee before police reached the scene. In the engagement that ensued with police, Gonzalez was shot and then promptly provided with emergency medical assistance. Both the victim and Gonzalez were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The El Paso Police Department reported that no officers received injuries during the incident.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, led by the Crimes Against Persons unit. Also involved are the Internal Affairs Shooting Review Team and the Texas Rangers, a protocol routine for incidents where officers discharge their weapons. The El Paso Police Department's statement confirmed these developments and added that criminal charges against Gonzalez are pending upon his release from the hospital. This case adds to a series of officer-involved shootings that have become a focal point for discussions on law enforcement and community safety.
