The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is currently investigating a shooting incident involving a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) detective. The shooting occurred during an attempted traffic stop initiated by the MDSO's Robbery Intervention Detail (RID), as reported by the Miami-Dade County government official website. The RID deputies had attempted to stop a yellow vehicle with illegal window tints yesterday near NW 62nd Street and NW 22nd Avenue.

The driver, later identified as Kristofer Lazaro Laboy, evaded the stop and was followed by MDSO Aviation Support Unit who tracked the vehicle until it reached an apartment complex around NW 4th Court and NW 85th Street Road, according to the official press release. Exiting the vehicle while reportedly armed, Laboy confronted the deputies, leading one deputy, Kelvin Cox, a veteran with 23 years of service, to discharge his firearm, fatally injuring Laboy.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue declared Laboy deceased at the scene of the incident. There were no other occupants in the vehicle, and none of the deputies involved sustained injuries during the altercation. The details of the confrontation and the sequence of events that led to the shooting are under scrutiny as part of the FDLE's ongoing investigation, and Deputy Cox's actions are being thoroughly examined in relation to the department's protocols and procedures.

The incident, which took place at approximately 5:15 P.M. yesterday, has sparked further inquiry into the circumstances surrounding deputy-involved shootings. The case, referenced by case number PD250617178408, continues to unfold as FDLE carries out its investigation, the MDSO said.
