Port St. Lucie residents awoke to the blare of sirens as firefighters battled a significant blaze at South East Pools and Spas early this morning. The fire was reported at approximately 5:37 a.m., and upon arrival, fire crews were met with a structure that was nearly an inferno, with half of the building engulfed in flames. This incident, occurring in the 7300 block of U.S. Highway 1, prompted an immediate response from the St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD), escalating the situation to a second alarm and summoning over 45 firefighters to the scene. According to CBS12 News, they worked swiftly to prevent the fire from reaching an adjacent fireworks store, which could have resulted in even greater danger.
In the midst of their efforts to contain the fire, a firefighter and a civilian have been transported to the hospital with injuries that were reported as non-life-threatening. Engulfing the business, pictures from the scene shown by WPBF highlighted the severity of the blaze which took several hours to fully extinguish. The proximity of the fire to the highway led to temporary lane closures on U.S. Hwy 1 heading towards Fort Pierce to ensure public safety, with one lane reopening around 8 a.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials have commenced a thorough examination of the site to determine the origin and the potential factors that may have contributed to the ignition and rapid spread of the flames. The SLCFD has not released further details regarding the condition of the injured firefighter and civilian.
