The streets of South Florida are set to bear new names, with a bill that could see areas of Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County honoring a mix of political figures, musical icons, and fallen law enforcement officers. This piece of legislation, HB 987, was passed in this spring's session and is now awaiting the decision of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, giving the potential for a four-mile stretch of Southern Boulevard to soon carry the title “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.” The section in question spans from Kirk Road, just south of Palm Beach International Airport, to South Ocean Boulevard near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club, as reported by Caribbean National Weekly.
In Miami-Dade County, changes include Southwest Eighth Street potentially transforming to honor former Republican Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart with its new moniker, the "Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart Memorial Highway." The renaming effort follows his death in March. There's also a proposition to formally designate a piece of Southwest 57th Avenue as "Manolo Reyes Boulevard," after the Miami city commissioner who recently passed away at 80, according to details obtained by NBC Miami.
Adding a musical note to the street signs of Hialeah, State Road 932, also known as Northwest 103rd Street or 49th Street, is poised to be renamed "Celia Cruz Way" in tribute to the renowned Cuban-American singer, the "Queen of Salsa." This portion of the bill serves to immortalize the cultural impact of Cruz in a city with deep Cuban American roots. Other parts of the state will see various recognitions as well, such as the "PBSO Motorman Highway" in Palm Beach County, honoring deputies who tragically died in a crash last November.
These proposed designations, if signed by DeSantis or allowed to automatically become law, are slated to take effect on July 1. The Florida Department of Transportation has been directed to install the proper signage to duly reflect each of the new honorary names.
