The community of Franklin is mourning once again following the death of Minaben Patel, 38, who had been hospitalised since a tragic crash on May 24 that also claimed the life of her 5-year-old daughter, Krisha Patel. WHDH reports that Minaben succumbed to her injuries, and an autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death. James N. Blanchard, 21, of Franklin, faces charges in relation to the crash that occurred when he hit a sedan while driving on the wrong side of Grove Street after consuming alcohol.
Boston 25 News shared details of a vigil planned by the SAFE Coalition, a Franklin-based nonprofit group, to honor Minaben's memory. It will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at the crash site on Grove Street. Last Wednesday, another vigil was held for her daughter, Krisha. James Blanchard's bail was set at $250,000 cash following his arraignment on charges that include motor vehicle homicide while driving negligently and under the influence of alcohol, among other counts.
Accused James Blanchard reportedly admitted to drinking a couple of beers at work before consuming more than a liter of vodka straight from the bottle, according to statements provided by prosecutor Christopher Meade during the arraignment in Wrentham District Court, as noted by Boston 25 News. Additional charges may be pending as the Norfolk District Attorney's Office and Franklin Police continue their investigation, with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
In a joint statement, Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey and Franklin Police Chief Thomas Lynch extended condolences to Minaben's family, according to reports by WHDH and Boston 25 News. The community has responded with support through gatherings and services. An obituary for Krisha Patel noted the limited time she spent with others and mentioned that she will be remembered by those who knew her.
