In a straightforward move to address a violent offense, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has apprehended three individuals in connection with a reported kidnapping and aggravated assault that unfolded in Soperton, then extended to Vidalia and Ailey, Georgia. As detailed in a GBI press release, arrests were made for Dean Tanner, Lauren Bailey, and Jeff Sconyers following a request for assistance from the Treutlen County Sheriff’s Office.
The GBI's report specifies a violent timeline that began on Tarrytown Road in Soperton, Treutlen County, where the three suspects allegedly committed physical assault and kidnapping against an unnamed victim. The harrowing ordeal did not conclude there: Tanner, Bailey, and Sconyers have been accused of assaulting the victim to unconsciousness after taking him to a residence on Pine Street in Vidalia. Per the report, the trio was allegedly seeking revenge for items they believed the victim had taken from Bailey's warehouse. The assault reportedly culminated in a secluded area of woods in Ailey, Montgomery County, where the victim was subjected to sexual assault.
Within the jurisdiction of their crimes, the suspects have each been charged with kidnapping and aggravated assault for the incidents in Soperton. It is anticipated that additional charges will be brought forth for the later offenses carried out in Vidalia and Ailey. Law enforcement took swift action, securing the arrests of Tanner, Bailey, and Sconyers on May 29, a day after the initial crime was reported, booking them into the Treutlen County Jail.
As the investigation progresses, the composite of charges will be reviewed by the district attorney's offices for the Dublin Judicial Circuit, the Middle Judicial Circuit, and the Oconee District. With the full weight of these charges looming, Tanner, Bailey, and Sconyers face a legal reckoning that promises little in terms of leniency for the severity and brutality of the crimes they stand accused. The GBI states that the investigation remains active and ongoing, and that upon conclusion, all evidence and findings will be turned over to the respective DA's offices for prosecution.
