The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has launched a probe into the death of an inmate at the Chatham County Jail at the request of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. Adam Lewis Varnedoe, a 45-year-old resident of Savannah, was found unresponsive in his cell yesterday morning. Lifesaving efforts were made but were ultimately unsuccessful, and Varnedoe was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the official information provided by the GBI, the call for their intervention occurred roughly an hour after Varnedoe was discovered by jail staff. The incident reportedly took place at approximately 10:45 a.m., which swiftly led to emergency procedures being enacted, though these attempts were to ultimately prove inadequate. The case has since prompted further inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death. The GBI announced that Varnedoe’s body is set to be transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler where an autopsy will seek to unravel the cause of death.
