The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to take an independent look into an officer-involved shooting that left one individual dead in Fulton County. This inquiry follows a request from the Fulton County Police Department to further scrutinize the incident.
According to the GBI release, at approximately 8:10 a.m. yesterday, an unidentified individual trespassed onto an apartment complex on McDaniel Street SW and vandalized a marked police vehicle. A bystander witnessed the act of destruction and alerted a nearby officer, who promptly arrived on the scene to assess the damage. Upon arrival, the officer encountered the suspect, who was brandishing a flat piece of metal. Despite the officer issuing multiple warnings to disarm, the suspect advanced, prompting the officer to open fire. The confrontation ended with the loss of the suspect’s life.
The aftermath of this shooting brought no physical harm to the officer, yet a life was drawn to a close at the scene. The body of the individual was consequently moved to the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office, where an autopsy will be performed to piece together the exact cause of death. Details surrounding the individual's identity remain under wraps, pending notification of kin.
What happens now is a thorough investigation to be conducted by the GBI, which will compile the sequence of events and hand them to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for a full review.
