West Valley City is reeling in the aftermath of a tragic shooting that occurred during a local festival, leaving three dead, including an infant. According to KUTV, the victims were identified as 41-year-old Fnu Reena and 18-year-old Hassan Lugundi, who were fatally shot along with an 8-month-old baby boy at WestFest being held at Centennial Park around 9:20 p.m. on Sunday.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation, but what is known is a 16-year-old male suspect, a resident of West Valley City, was arrested at the scene and has been booked on three counts of suspected homicide, he is currently being held at a juvenile detention facility and the decision whether to try him as a minor or adult remains pending, as obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill expressed that it is too soon to discuss these matters.
The shooting has deeply affected the community, with eyewitnesses expressing their shock and trauma to FOX 13, like Ivy Kanga who said, "I feel like people should stop bringing guns to events like that because they’re supposed to be for families and kids," echoing the sentiment of incredulity and fear that has taken hold of the people who were witness to the violent incident.
