In a collaborative effort that underscores the importance of workplace safety, the Illinois Department of Labor's On-Site Safety and Health Consultation Program teamed up with regional construction leaders to champion a culture of prevention at the Hollywood Casino Joliet construction site. The partnership culminated in a celebration of the project's completion, having successfully navigated the inherent risks of commercial construction to ensure minimum injuries and bolstered worker wellbeing, an effort chronicled in an Illinois government report.
IDOL Director Jane Flanagan remarked in an article, "Our partnership exemplifies what's possible when employers, labor, and government work together to prioritize safety," highlighting that the proactive stance began at the project's inception last year. More than 1,600 workers completed a safety orientation, which led to a reduction in work-related illnesses and injuries. According to the State of Illinois, these measures demonstrated the "real value of proactive safety practices."
Not only did this collaboration enhance safety protocols, but it also fostered leadership in safety practices among the construction industry, Dan Ruane, Vice President, Safety at Pepper Construction, stressed the importance of having the "Voice of the Worker" as part of creating a robust safety culture, a sentiment echoed by Al Jotautas, Safety Director for the Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council, who lauded the initiative for fostering a positive culture at the workplace through daily safety routines.
Looking beyond the Hollywood Casino project, IDOL's On-Site program continues to extend its free and confidential consultation services to small- and medium-sized businesses across Illinois, with a federal grant covering 90 percent of the program's budget and the remaining 10 percent financed by the state, these consultations are aimed at shoring up workplace safety and health practices throughout the state's varied industries, businesses interested can contact the On-Site program directly by calling its helpline or visiting WorkSafe's website.
