An incident at the Bibb County Jail has left one inmate dead and four others injured, following a violent confrontation on Wednesday. The deceased inmate has been identified as 22-year-old Breele Jahiem Johnson, who, according to FOX 5 Atlanta, was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. The altercation involved multiple inmates and is currently under investigation by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
During the conflict, which occurred in the jail's D-block, it was reported that inmates breached a sliding door separating two cell areas, according to Bibb County Sheriff David Davis, as stated in an interview with 13WMAZ. A deputy noticing the tampering called for backup before the altercation ensued. Surveillance footage captured the moment the fight erupted when the group entered the adjoining cell, the entire episode lasting less than two minutes before the assailants retreated.
The sheriff acknowledged that the jail's infrastructure, constructed in 1989, was "pretty well worn out" and susceptible to the force exerted by inmates during such incidents. This statement comes in the wake of protests organized by the Human and Civil Rights Coalition of Georgia, calling for improved conditions within the facility. The incident has prompted increased scrutiny of detention standards and has led to improvised weapons, including shanks, being recovered in initial evidence collection, as Davis told reporters.
The conditions of the injured inmates were disclosed, with Willie Haugabrook III, 40, and Brandon Willis, 19, being taken to the hospital and are now in stable condition. Inmates Stacey Motez Mathews, 22, and Isaiah Joshua Bailey, 22, were treated by jail medical personnel, did not require hospitalization, as per the sheriff's office statement. According to prior reporting by 13WMAZ, Johnson and Willis faced charges for a 2023 drive-by shooting, while Haugabrook and Bailey had each been charged with unrelated murders and Mathews with felony theft and fleeing from police.
While the immediate aftermath of the altercation is being tended to, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's involvement signals an in-depth probe into the incident's motives and the security measures within the Bibb County Jail. As of now, official accounts have withheld certain details, such as the exact cause of the disagreement that escalated into violence, and the families of the impacted inmates are in the process of being notified directly about the conditions of their loved ones.
