An investigation is underway following the death of a man in police custody in Portland's Kenton neighborhood on Friday evening, the Portland Police Bureau reported. Officers from North Precinct initially responded to a welfare check at approximately 10:03 p.m. when they encountered a man acting erratically, as he flooded his apartment and was seen displaying knives outside his window, authorities witnessed upon arrival, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Emergency medical services were summoned shortly after officers arrived at the scene, and it was reported that officers performed CPR on the man before he was transported to the hospital, where, ultimately, he died despite the efforts made to save him. In line with departmental policy, all three officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave and Homicide Unit Detectives are currently conducting a thorough investigation with oversight from various agencies, including the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Chief Bob Day, as he arrived at the scene.

The Portland Police Bureau is calling for any witnesses with information about the incident to reach out to Detective Samantha Cater or Detective Brent Christensen at their respective email addresses or through the provided phone contact.
