The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee has issued an urgent warning to the public concerning a new scam circulating via text message. Residents have been receiving fraudulent texts claiming to be from the Tennessee Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) threatening enforcement penalties for unpaid traffic tickets, as per the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
The deceptive message insists that recipients have until tomorrow to settle their supposed debts before facing severe consequences, such as having their vehicle registration and driving privileges suspended, possible prosecution, and damage to their credit scores. The Sheriff's Office copied the message content, alerting the recipients to its false nature and advising them to delete any similar messages they had received. It includes a bogus payment link that redirects to a counterfeit website, misleadingly crafted to siphon personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims.
Jefferson County and beyond residents are being cautioned to remain vigilant against this type of text scam, which exploits the fear of legal repercussions to deceive people into parting with sensitive information and money. Law enforcement officials, including the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, remind the public that official communication regarding traffic violations or legal matters traditionally comes through direct mail or verified electronic correspondence, not unsolicited texts with hyperlinks.
