The initiative sees several JPSO members working as a cohort to earn their Associate Degrees in Criminal Justice. It's a program that blends professional duty with academic pursuit, offering deputies an opportunity to enhance their understanding of criminal justice while continuing their day-to-day duties in community service.
The engagement with education recently took a practical turn, as the deputies embarked on a field trip to the Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola. They didn't just pace the grounds and peer into cells; the deputies engaged in dialogues with inmates, an experience described as "powerful" by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office on Facebook. This venture allowed the deputies to grapple with the tangible realities of the prison system and listen to those who navigate its confines daily.
