In a display of readiness and partnership, members of the Knoxville Police Department took part in the annual Department of Energy emergency preparedness drill. This year's exercise aimed to sharpen the skills necessary for responding to potential region-wide emergencies. As revealed in a social media post by the department, Knoxville Police Department personnel were actively engaged both on the field and within operation centers.

During the exercise, KPD officers coordinated their efforts from inside the Knoxville-Knox County Emergency Management Agency (KEMA) Emergency Operations Center. Simultaneously, they activated their operation center within what will eventually be the space for the Real-Time Information Center, as per the Knoxville Police Department. The objective of these mobilizations was to safely manage and to properly monitor the response and activity throughout the drill.

The exercise wasn't confined to the operation centers alone. KPD deployed remote field teams to neighboring counties, testing the department's ability to communicate via radio, live video feed, and email. This element of the exercise was designed to assess how well KPD personnel could assist in an emergency. "Those teams consisted of Special Operations Squad, Search and Rescue and UAV team members," the Knoxville Police Department detailed in their announcement.

The Knoxville Police Department emphasized this point, stating, "Emergency response preparedness and readiness are critical to our mission to protect and serve the community." They believe that such large-scale exercises are vital as they offer "essential real-world training opportunities for our officers and many partners."
