A violent confrontation on Mud Island escalated into a shooting that left a man critically wounded during a robbery attempt on Monday afternoon, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) reported. According to Action News 5, the incident, which initially came in as a robbery call, occurred around 12:45 p.m. at Island Place East and Island Village Drive, where the victim was shot twice after being approached by three unidentified individuals in a red Chevy pickup truck.
Witnesses told WREG that the victim, who was driving a black truck, collided with a fire hydrant while attempting to escape his assailants. The suspects, described as three men, shot the man before fleeing the area in the red truck, leaving him behind in critical condition. Having been rushed to Regional One, the victim is now reported as stable.
MPD has made no arrests in connection with the shooting but has released footage of the suspects' vehicle to capture the perpetrators. The video, obtained by FOX13 Memphis, showcases the red, single-cab Chevrolet pickup truck that the suspects used to approach the victim before trying to rob and subsequently shooting him.
The shooting has instilled an atmosphere of fear among residents, who once regarded the Mud Island area as one of Memphis' safe havens. "We're young, so we're just now stepping out into the real world. So, to know that this is the real world is scary," said Zoie Peppers, as she was unable to contain her concern about the future safety of Harbor Town, as told to Action News 5. Echoing her sentiments, Apri Wilkins added, "It definitely has you on your toes because they haven’t been caught. So, who knows what could be happening right now?" Both women expressed their anxiety while doubting the security of their neighborhood.
