Early morning violence erupted in a quiet district when District 2 officers were called to the 4100 block of Manchester due to a reported shooting. On arrival, they found an adult man shot, now stable, while the gunman fled, setting off a citywide manhunt that ended in tragedy, as per a release by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
The pursuit began shortly after officers dispatched a description of the suspect on a moped, a subsequent encounter at Manchester and Sarah Avenue failed to yield compliance from the suspect who sped off leading to a chase, with Drug Enforcement & Intervention detectives joining in. The chase culminated in a vacant lot at the 3900 block of Clayton where what could have been an arrest took a deadly turn, the reasons for that fatal decision still await scrutiny.
In this empty space, silhouetted against the pale wash of dawn, the suspect made a move which proved to be his last. As reported by the SLMPD report, "As the suspect was exiting his moped, he refused orders and reached into a bag," which led to two detectives, one with 14 years of service and the other with 7, discharging their weapons, resulting in the suspect's death. A firearm later discovered at the scene perhaps suggests a narrative, though the full story behind the suspect's intent remains unspoken, muted by gunfire.
The identities of those involved hang in the balance as the department has yet to release the name of the deceased.
