A Marietta man, identified as 29-year-old Rodrigo Morales-Figueroa, is facing federal charges after a federal court appearance last Monday, for alleged possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, authorities said.
In a collaborative effort that underscores the depth of the drug epidemic bridging national borders, officials swiftly acted to halt the flow of fentanyl from a Mexico-based drug trafficking organization into Georgia, the seizure resulted in the interception of ten kilograms of the lethal opioid cleverly concealed within car batteries; the arrest of Morales-Figueroa is a stark reminder of the drug's unyielding grip on communities.
According to a statement by U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg, foreign cartels "profit from the addiction and deaths of Americans," while Jae W. Chung, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Atlanta Division, reiterated that "keeping our communities safe is our highest priority." Steven N. Schrank, Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge for Georgia and Alabama, touted the operation’s success in preventing "this poison from reaching the streets of Georgia," according to U.S. Attorney's Office.
The operation that led to Morales-Figueroa's arrest involved a controlled delivery of fake fentanyl on June 18, after federal investigators picked up on the drug trafficking organization's plan to dispatch a courier; Morales-Figueroa reportedly arrived at the Gainesville location, reviewed the fake fentanyl packages, loaded them into his car right before being arrested by deputies from Hall County Sheriff’s Office, all of which illustrates the extent and sophistication of law enforcement strategies to combat drug trafficking networks.
It is important for the public to recognize that the charges against Morales-Figueroa are allegations, with an indiction by a grand jury pending, as the defendant remains innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law; this case, led by Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Keen, is part of Operation Take Back America, which seeks to severely disrupt illegal immigration and the harmful activities of cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
