The Healey-Driscoll Administration has announced $50 million in grants to support solar and electrification projects across Massachusetts state entities. The funding, highlighted at a ribbon-cutting event for the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority’s (PVTA) new rooftop solar array, is intended to reduce long-term energy costs for public colleges and agencies.

According to an announcement from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts website, Governor Healey said the funding will help public institutions lower their energy expenses. The grants fall under the Department of Energy Resources’ (DOER) Leading By Example initiative and will support the development of 21 megawatts of solar energy at state sites.

Lieutenant Governor Driscoll described the approach as a comprehensive approach focusing on both new solar projects and the modernization of existing clean energy systems. The administration expects the projects to provide long-term savings and contribute to the state's decarbonization goals.

The PVTA’s solar project is projected to save the agency over $100,000 annually and generate 1,684 megawatt hours of clean electricity in its first year. Over the system’s lifetime, it is expected to save PVTA about $2 million. Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper said the project marks a significant step in creating healthier communities. PVTA Acting Chair J.M. Sorrell noted the importance of energy efficiency for Springfield residents who rely on public transit.

The Leading By Example Program has already awarded $10 million to 19 state entities. The new $50 million allocation expands opportunities for additional state facilities to adopt solar and clean energy solutions. Applications for the Decarbonization Implementation Grant Program are set to open this month. More details are available on the Leading By Example Program website.
