June is back on our calendars, and with it comes National Safety Month – thirty days dedicated not to barbecues and beach outings, but to the less thrilling, though arguably more important, task of emphasizing safety. Kicking off this no-nonsense month, the Mesquite Police Department in Texas took to social media to remind us all of the essence of safety awareness, precisely when summer fun is starting to peak. "National Safety Month is recognized every June and aims to raise awareness about safety hazards and encourage individuals and organizations to take proactive steps to prevent accidents and injuries," shared the department in a post on their official Facebook page.
Ensuring the spread of this message far and wide, the National Safety Council (NSC) steps in with an arsenal of free resources, playing a pivotal role in pushing the initiative. They encourage people to join the movement to slash the numbers of "unintentional injuries and deaths," as put forth by the Mesquite Police's social media rallying cry. To underpin this push, they've slapped the hashtags #nationalsafetycouncil and #nationalsafetymonth onto their missive, just in case the message needed any more amplification.
While the NSC's campaign looks on its face like just another monthly observance, there's a very real backdrop here: accidents don't take a summer break. In truth, warmer weather can often lead to a spike in outdoor activities, which in turn, can result in a higher frequency of injury-inducing incidents. It's this exact seasonality that renders National Safety Month not just timely, but crucial. Especially considering that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accidents are ranked among the top causes of death in the United States.
