With mosquito season in full swing, residents in Miami-Dade County are being called upon to take active measures to protect themselves from the blood-sucking pests and the diseases they carry. According to a recent release from Miami-Dade County, the combination of frequent rains and high temperatures create the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. While the Mosquito Control Division is at the forefront with their surveillance and area-wide treatments, individuals are urged to participate in their "drain and cover" campaign to reduce exposure and eliminate breeding sites.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava highlighted the public health aspect, stating, "Keeping our residents safe and healthy is our number one priority, and that includes protecting them from the serious risks mosquitoes can pose during the summer." She emphasized the community effort required in the fight against these insects, calling for everyone to take part in preventative measures. Meanwhile, Department of Solid Waste Management Director Aneisha Daniel, PhD, reassured the community, "This is the time of year when Miami-Dade residents may experience the worst of the mosquito season, but rest assured, our team is more than capable of responding to any nuisance issue, mass emergence, or disease flare up. Please remember to report mosquito issues immediately and help us continue to carry out the work vital to keeping everyone safe," as she told Miami-Dade County.

Dr. John-Paul Mutebi, Division Chief, stressed the importance of proactive measures, advising residents to check yards for any accumulated water and get rid of it before the nuisance biters and disease carriers can get through their full lifecycle. The Mosquito Control Division has beefed up its arsenal against the pests with a new A1 Super Duty-outfitted larviciding truck, as part of its ongoing effort to control populations. The regular analysis of more than 300 mosquito traps throughout the county guides the timing and location of these treatments.

Among the recommended actions for reducing the mosquitoes' impact, the Mosquito Control Division advises the use of EPA-registered mosquito repellent when outdoors and maintaining a vigilant eye for potential breeding grounds, such as standing water in yard fixtures or clogged rain gutters. Additionally, they suggest employing larvicides and environmental modifications like filling tree and lawn holes to prevent water collection, as per Miami-Dade County. For residents looking to request an inspection or learn more, numerous resources, including a mobile app, a 311 contact center, and the county website, are easily accessible.

The division is also engaging the public with education and awareness during National Mosquito Control Awareness Week. Residents can join in on live virtual events and follow themed posts on Facebook and Instagram at @305Mosquito. More information about the live events, including RSVP and links to recordings, can be found on their Facebook events page.
