A tragic scene unfolded on the streets of Miami when a vehicle, after striking a male pedestrian, careened into a parked car and caused it to slam into an ice cream truck. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the site of the crash, which occurred around 6:53 p.m. at the intersection of Southwest 19th Street and 21st Avenue; meanwhile, Miami Fire Rescue transported the driver and a woman from the ice cream truck to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital for their injuries, according to Local 10 News.
Surveillance footage from the incident, as described by NBC6, captured the violent impact that launched the pedestrian into the air before the subsequent collisions; the video was said to be so graphic that NBC6 chose to blur portions of it. The driver reportedly attempted to flee the scene after the incident, but was detained by bystanders before being hospitalized, however, the reasons behind the driver's erratic behavior that evening have not yet been clarified by Miami police.
Concerned neighbors voiced their distress over the speeding issues in the area, a problem they've noted for some time, and suggested simple remedies like speed tables or traffic circles to Local 10 News. A resident, Denise Galves Torros, underscored the tragedy of the situation by stating, "It's very sad and totally preventable." The crash has brought to light ongoing safety concerns in a neighborhood frequented by children due to the proximity of a school, park, and library.
Fears were echoed by a neighbor to NBC6, who lamented the dangers posed to locals, "This is horrible. This is a neighborhood. We've got kids everywhere," capturing the community's anxiety about the frequent speeding that occurs not just during school hours, but also in the middle of the day and at night. The history of speeding in the area is a chronic problem that the residents believe has been insufficiently addressed, marked by the fact that this latest incident isn't an isolated event but a deadly manifestation of ongoing traffic concerns.
Investigators have yet to release the identities of the people involved and are continuing their evidence collection at the scene, which remained cordoned off into the evening. While charges have not been announced, police indicated that they were likely for the driver involved in this fatal series of events.
