In Minneapolis, a recent incident could have easily escalated into a tragic confrontation, but was instead resolved peacefully due to the effective use of de-escalation tactics by local police. As reported in a social media post by the Minneapolis Police Department, a potentially dangerous situation involving an armed individual was handled with care and professionalism.
Officers from the 3rd Precinct were dispatched to an address on the 3000 block of 22nd Avenue South after receiving a call about a person with a knife. Upon encountering the suspect, who was holding a knife outside an apartment building, the officers engaged her with "calm communication, patience, and professionalism." It was inside the building, after the suspect had been taken into custody safely, that officers located a victim apparently struck with a purse containing a chunk of concrete.
The Minneapolis Police Department's handling of the incident, avoiding any physical harm by taking the suspect into custody, is being held up as an exemplary case of how de-escalation can avert possible violence. "We’re always proud—and relieved—when our officers are able to safely de-escalate potentially dangerous situations," the department stated, highlighting the importance of such outcomes. The suspect in question was booked into Hennepin County Jail on charges of assault.
