Travelers planning to traverse the Morbihan Bridge over Bayou Teche will need to adjust their routes as the LA 344 crossing will be temporarily closed for repairs. According to an announcement by the Department of Transportation and Development, the bridge is scheduled to shut down on tomorrow, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., provided the weather cooperates.
While the official detour route will not be physically posted, it has been communicated digitally to consist of LA 86, LA 182, LA 31, and LA 677. In the absence of posted signs, drivers are encouraged to carefully plan to detour ahead of time or to use navigation tools to safely navigate around the closure. The maintenance work is necessary to ensure the continued safety and structural integrity of the bridge. Regrettably, emergency vehicles will have to seek alternate routes as they will not be able to quickly pass through the area during the closure period.
The bridge's maintenance is a part of ongoing efforts to uphold infrastructure across the state. The Department of Transportation and Development has highlighted that the closure and repairs are essential for the maintenance of the bridge, which is a critical thoroughfare for locals and those passing through Iberia Parish.
Motorists are reminded by the DOTD to drive with added caution when approaching work zones. Keeping an eye out for work crews and their equipment is not just for your own safety, but it's also part of sharing the road responsibly. The inconvenience caused by the closure, although temporary, is noted by the department, and they have extended their appreciation for the public's patience during this time.
