Early Tuesday morning, a fatal accident involving a motorcycle and a vehicle on the Bishop Ford Freeway resulted in extended closures and significant delays. According to Chicago Sun-Times, the collision occurred around 3 a.m. near Dolton's Sibley Boulevard, claiming the life of the motorcyclist at the scene. All southbound lanes of the freeway were closed while state police conducted their investigation; no additional information about the crash was available from the state police at the time.
Illinois State Police revealed that the crash on I-94 near Sibley Avenue happened at approximately 2:57 a.m. when a motorcycle struck a vehicle in the southbound lanes. Despite the early morning hour, the crash has heavily disrupted the usual flow of traffic, causing major delays to quickly build up. In a statement obtained by NBC Chicago, NBC 5 traffic reporter Kye Martin alerted commuters to prepare to add up to 15 minutes to their travel due to the rerouting.
The I-94 incident has been a focus for traffic reports throughout the morning, as disruptions continued well into the rush hour. The closure of the southbound lanes remained in effect for several hours after the collision, and authorities diligently worked the scene. The repercussions of the wreck were felt beyond the immediate vicinity of the crash, with vehicles packed bumper to bumper as commuters scrambled to find alternate routes.
In addition to the I-94 tragedy, another significant traffic incident was reported by Kye Martin, with a semi truck rollover on I-55 near Burr Ridge complicating the morning commute even further. This second accident occurred in an area quite a distance from the motorcycle crash, yet it contributed to an already challenging day for anyone trying to navigate through or around the Chicago area. With hazmat on the scene and lanes shut down, traffic was reported to be "jam packed," extending back to Bolingbrook and surrounding locales.
