Jonathan Mercer, a 25-year-old man found himself behind bars with a bond set at $19,500 after a high-speed chase that ended in a collision on 14th Avenue North; his actions left an innocent driver injured, this chain of events unfolded as detectives from the Violent Crimes Division, who noticed the white Infiniti Q50 he was driving with its fake tag and damaged sunroof, attempted to initiate a traffic stop, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
Last night's pursuit began near Georgia Court when detectives, conducting routine surveillance, spotted the vehicle that had been reported stolen from an adjoining county on June 11, the tension escalated when Mercer decided to flee instead of complying with law enforcement, thereby triggering a high-speed pursuit down 14th Avenue North—a pursuit that culminated in an injurious crash as he barreled through a red light at Church Street intersection, resulting in the collision with another motorist, as reported by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
According to a report by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, after the crash, Mercer abandoned the wrecked Infiniti and attempted to evade on foot, but his attempt was short-lived as detectives quickly apprehended him; the driver of the vehicle struck by Mercer received on-scene treatment for his injuries from medics attending the incident.
Further investigation revealed an additional temporary tag concealed beneath the counterfeit one affixed to the Infiniti, which traced back to a Kia Rio, as the detectives combed through the aftermath, Mercer's charges include aggravated reckless driving, vehicle theft, theft of property, resisting arrest, and evading arrest with both felony and misdemeanor counts among other offenses, as per the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
