Two women, Dahiana Canas of East Boston and Vanessa Correa of Lynn, have died after being pulled from the Merrimack River near Plum Island in Newburyport, Massachusetts. According to WCVB, the 25-year-olds were in critical condition after being swept away from the shore on last Sunday night.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. when first responders were alerted to the women in distress. Fishermen on two nearby boats assisted in the rescue, along with the U.S. Coast Guard. Both women were brought to shore unresponsive and initially taken to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. They were later transferred to hospitals in Boston and Burlington.
CBS Boston reported that Correa passed away on Wednesday, followed by Canas on Thursday. City Marshal Matthew Simons confirmed the deaths and acknowledged the efforts of first responders and civilians involved in the rescue attempt.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, led by the Newburyport Police Department and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
