A 13-year-old student was struck by a police cruiser outside Rupert A. Nock Middle School in Newburyport, Massachusetts, around 2:30 p.m. yesterday. According to NBC Boston, the student reportedly ran into the street from between parked cars, and the eastbound cruiser collided with him as he crossed Low Street during school dismissal.
City Marshal Matthew Simons stated the officer immediately provided aid, and the student was transported to Anna Jacques Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was evaluated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
The Newburyport Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene. The incident is under investigation by Sergeant Jason Kohan of the Newburyport Police Department. Authorities are asking witnesses to contact them at 978-462-4411, ext. 1, according to a release from John Guilfoil Public Relations via news.jgpr.net.
City officials acknowledged the serious nature of the incident and confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
