Early this morning in northeast Memphis, an altercation escalated into gun violence, leaving one man severely wounded and another detained by police. According to the Action News 5 report, the Memphis Police Department responded to the shooting on Townes Avenue near Jackson Avenue. The situation was still evolving as the department initiated their investigation.
The shooting incident, which took place shortly before 3 a.m., resulted in a man sustaining multiple gunshot wounds to his lower body, noted FOX13 Memphis. The victim was immediately taken to a local hospital and listed in critical condition while one individual was taken into custody following the event.
Details surrounding the shooting have come gradually into light. The Memphis Police Department conveyed that the victim identified the shooter as his cousin, stemming from a confrontation. "And once they arrived on the scene, they found a male suspect who was suffering from several gunshots to his lower extremities," said Kimberly Collier of the Memphis Police Department in an interview obtained by WREG News. A witness reported hearing the shots and subsequently seeing the suspect flee in a black Charger, adding to the urgency of the investigation.
The suspect later made contact with authorities, claiming to have shot the victim in self-defense. "Officers arrived at the scene where the cousin was located and took him into custody at that time," Collier stated. The police urged the community to come forward with any information, emphasizing the importance of seemingly minor details in aiding the investigation. "We always ask if you know something, no matter how small you think the detail is. Share it with the police so that we can determine through our investigation whether it's something that could actually, you know, help close the case," Collier told WREG News.
