A devastating home explosion in Liberty Township over the weekend has left one man dead and two others, including a 4-year-old child, in critical condition, raising serious questions about the risks of homemade fireworks. The incident, which occurred last Saturday night, resulted in the death of 34-year-old Justin Braun, as reported by Cleveland19.
Firefighters were summoned to the home on the 500 block of Montrose Street shortly before 9:30 p.m. and discovered significant damage but initially could not determine the cause of the blast. Another injured adult and the young boy, both unnamed, are reported by WFMJ to remain in critical condition. Additionally, a woman involved in the incident drove herself to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
Investigations by the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office and the ATF are still underway, but preliminary findings point to the manufacturing of homemade fireworks within the house as the likely cause of the explosion. The Liberty Fire Department, led by Chief Douglas Theobald, noted the presence of a significant amount of explosive powder, thought to be more volatile than commercial varieties. According to a statement made to WKBN, Theobald encouraged leaving fireworks to the professionals, highlighting the dangers posed by homemade explosives.
The local authorities had previously been alerted to the house on May 7 regarding fireworks complaints. The home, now unstable and unsafe after the blast, is expected to be recommended for demolition by Theobald. As Lieutenant Mohammed Awad of the Youngstown Bomb Squad told WFMJ, the explosive used likely "way exceeds anything you can get commercially." The incident serves as a tragic reminder about the dangers of illegal manufacturing and handling of fireworks.
