Wildfires continue to pose a significant threat in Oregon, with the Alder Springs Fire in Jefferson County causing a stir this week and prompting emergency actions. The Oregon State Fire Marshal has acted decisively, sending in incident management teams and structural protection task forces to tackle the blaze, reported to have surged to 1,500 acres by Monday evening. According to the Oregon State Fire Marshal, these urgent measures were called for in response to the fast-moving fire that emerged on the Crooked River National Grasslands.
The situation escalated quickly yesterday, with the initial spark transforming into a rapidly expanding inferno within hours. This led to mandatory evacuations as designated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. As the fire marshal's resources were being deployed, aerial assets such as large air tankers and smoke jumpers were already battling the fire from above. "This is the second time our agency has mobilized resources in the last week because of a wildfire," State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple highlighted, per the Oregon State Fire Marshal.
The impact of the fire extended beyond residents, prompting evacuation advisories across multiple levels of urgency and affecting livestock as the community rallied to provide shelter and safe havens for both people and animals. Assistance venues such as Highland Baptist Church in Redmond and Ranch Chapel have been designated as refuges for those displaced by the blaze. Meanwhile, the Deschutes County Fairgrounds and Over the Edge Taphouse have opened their spaces for animal evacuees, provided the owners bring their corrals.
