In a move that raises questions and concerns among local business owners, the City of Orlando has abruptly suspended its Minority and Women Business Enterprise program. This decision was made public early this morning. According to WFTV, city officials are conducting a review of the program to determine whether it aligns with federal law, which is the stated reason for this sudden pause.
The program in question has been a cornerstone of the city's efforts to promote diversity and equal opportunities within the marketplace, particularly aimed at bolstering the involvement of businesses owned by women and minorities in city contracts and projects, as it has come under some scrutiny, Channel 9 sought clarification on whether contractors participating in the program have been informed of the suspension and if this would affect their payments, however, there isn't a response from the city at the time of publication.
Meanwhile, WESH reported that the suspension of the Minority and Women Business Enterprise program took effect immediately, catching many off guard and leaving numerous individuals in a state of uncertainty about their ongoing and future dealings with the city.
