In an ongoing situation that has left residents sweltering, Park Forest officials have reported partial progress in restoring the air conditioning at a local apartment complex. Mayor Joseph A. Woods disclosed that one of the four buildings at the Autumn Ridge Apartments now has a working air conditioning system, following weeks of issues during an intense heat wave. In the statement obtained by ABC 7 Chicago, Woods said the management has been issued numerous citations and hopes to have the air restored in all buildings soon.
The discomfort is palpable in the residents' experiences, as reported by local media. According to FOX 32, families and elderly individuals in the complex have not received clear communication from the building management regarding the A/C issues. Furthermore, the mayor highlighted that the village is in the midst of pending litigation with the property managers, though the specifics of the lawsuit were not disclosed. Woods stressed the need for "immediate relief for our residents," acknowledging the lack of adequate communication as a persistent issue.
Residents, suffering in the punishing heat, have made do with fans and light clothing, but to little avail. Chante Hill, quoted in the ABC 7 Chicago article, described the conditions as "awful, just awful, oppressive heat." Meanwhile, Andrea Deese-Shepard, another resident struggling with respiratory problems, has seen the temperature in her apartment soar to 95 degrees. The village has nearly 300 units and provides cooling centers at the Park Forest Police Department and Village Hall as temporary refuges.
With A/C functioning in only a quarter of the buildings currently, the remainder of the Park Forest apartment's residents continue to face the heat wave with meager respite. Mayor Woods has urged those suffering to seek cooler conditions when possible and remains adamant on holding the property owners accountable for making the necessary repairs. Autumn Ridge apartment management has not provided any official statement on the situation.
