
Portland leaders gathered at the Portland Building to reaffirm the city’s sanctuary status and encourage peaceful protests, according to Portland.gov. Mayor Keith Wilson emphasized the city’s support for the right to peaceful demonstration, calling it a core democratic principle, according to the City of Portland release.
With protests planned locally and across the country, city and state officials are urging calm. Mayor Wilson was joined in his call by Oregon Governor Tina Kotek and Attorney General Dan Rayfield. Though Governor Kotek was not present, her written statement supported Oregonians’ right to peaceful protest.
Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson also addressed attendees, stressing the need to protect sanctuary policies and urging nonviolent action. She encouraged residents to express their views through peaceful means and emphasized unity in support of affected communities.
Officials reiterated their intention to ensure safety and order during the demonstrations while upholding the right to free expression.
