Heads up, City dwellers: starting from July 1, those looking to repair or connect their sewer laterals will need to dig a little deeper into their pockets. As reported by the City of Portland, it was found that the fees previously set for Utility Review (UR) and Utility Construction (UC) permits weren't matching up with the actual costs for field inspections.
What this means for permit seekers is that they'll face a new inspection fee of $295. The City has been picking up part of the tab due to a deficit in covering the inspection costs. Operated by the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) in coordination with PP&D and the Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), the program was clearly in need of a financial patch-up. This increase also includes an across-the-board fee hike of 5%, aimed at keeping up with inflation and ensuring efficient permit processing, as widely covered in the City's announcement.
The City Council's approach is sustainability — making sure that the program pays for itself over time. However, it is important to note, especially for those considering the trenchless option, that UR permits for sewer lateral CIPP lining won't come with the new inspection fee. Homeowners interested in the finer details can find more information or reach out with questions through the official City post.
