A Wareham Target dressing room became the scene of a disturbing violation of privacy yesterday, when a registered sex offender allegedly recorded a woman as she was changing. According to WCVB, the suspect has been identified as 37-year-old Gregory Mattos of Mashpee.
Responding to the incident, officers were provided details by Target's loss prevention team. Based on surveillance video, the suspect was spotted exiting the store on a moped. As reported by CBS Boston, the police canvassed the area and tracked down Mattos on Main Street. He matched the surveillance video's description and was arrested without incident, in a case that was all too reminiscent of past offenses.
"The female told officers that the male held a cell phone over the fitting room stall door while she was changing," stated the Wareham police, according to CBS Boston. The invasive and illegal act led to charges against Mattos for photographing an unsuspecting nude person.
Failure to fade into obscurity, Gregory Mattos's criminal history includes prior offenses that orbit around sexual misconduct. He was charged back in 2016 with unlawful sexual surveillance for an "upskirting" incident. He failed to register as a sex offender in an unrelated case, said the police. This storied past draws a picture of reoccurring transgressions, spotlighting the cyclical nature of such crimes.
Following his arrest, Mattos was released on cash bail. He's scheduled for arraignment today, where he will face the consequences of his alleged actions once again.
