Amid ongoing concerns about the treatment of detainees, U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez conducted a tour of the Krome Detention Center in Miami-Dade County today. Gimenez, whose agenda includes federal homeland security operations oversight, is expected to hold a press conference detailing his observations following the congressional oversight visit to the ICE facility, CBS News Miami reported.

Despite reports of overcrowding and problematic transfers, as noted by CBS News Miami, Rep. Gimenez, after a recent visit to another facility, commented on the conditions saying, "I saw no deplorable living conditions here," and referring to the facility, added, "This is not the Ritz-Carlton. It is a detention center. But there's nothing inhumane about what's going on," simultaneously, there are accounts of detainees using an "SOS" sign in protest and clashes leading to property damage and resistances to orders.

The congressman, as the only Cuban-born member of the 119th Congress, has been vocal about law enforcement oversight and border security. Earlier in June, Gimenez toured the Federal Detention Center in Downtown Miami, making him the first Republican lawmaker to inspect the site following a Miami Herald investigation that highlighted concerns over the treatment of detainees.

During his visit to the Downtown Miami federal facility, the congressman acknowledged operational challenges, such as malfunctioning elevators that have limited detainees’ movements, "once that elevator is up and running, they would have additional time to be out," Gimenez explained, and despite knowing an incident where 42 detainees reportedly disobeyed orders and vandalized a holding area, with the congressman admitting, "There had to be force," according to Local 10 News; during the FDC tour, Gimenez remarked on the comprehensive health care provided saying, “They’re giving their medications every single day. They have facilities. They have their own X-ray facilities. They have optometrists, hearing, dental. I mean, it’s a full-service jail.”

The focus on these detention centers has intensified with advocacy groups and family members raising issues about access to personal care items and medical services under the weight of the facilities' infrastructure. The Krome facility specifically faces increased scrutiny over reports of uneven living standards and the handling of ICE detainees.
