A suspected swatting incident in Richmond led to a heavy police response today after an anonymous caller claimed to be holding hostages and to have killed one, according to a post by the Richmond Police Department.
The alarming call, received shortly after 5:00 PM, prompted immediate action from the local law enforcement. The caller stated he was in the 700 block of E. Main Street, armed with firearms and explosives, holding five Jewish hostages. Multiple response teams, including Richmond PD’s SWAT and Drone Teams, converged on the scene.
As part of the procedure, nearby buildings were evacuated with support from the Randolph County SWAT Team. A live webcam feed in the vicinity was also discovered and subsequently shut down, after which the communication with the supposed perpetrator changed, the police department's social media post detailed.
Investigation efforts quickly uncovered the deceptive nature of the call. "Make no mistake, what happened today was not a joke," Chief Kyle Weatherly stated. "It was a calculated and dangerous disruption, and we responded with speed, coordination, and professionalism." The department assured that they treat every emergency call with utmost seriousness and commitment to public safety.
