An incident involving Atlanta sports reporter Tabitha Turner and an Uber driver named Nicole Smith has raised concerns over passenger safety within the rideshare industry. The altercation, which began over climate control in the vehicle, escalated to physical violence on Interstate 85 near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that the dispute occurred when Turner requested the car's windows to be closed and the air conditioning to be turned on due to the heat.
According to the police, Smith reacted by pulling over and demanding that Turner exit the car without a refund, leading to further disagreement. Turner, having witnessed claimed she wouldn't leave until the police were called or the fare refunded, was then allegedly assaulted by Smith, who pepper-sprayed her before pulling her out of the vehicle. FOX 5 Atlanta also mentions that cellphone footage confirms Smith as the aggressor and that she now faces charges of battery and simple battery.
Turner expressed during a press conference that the assault and its aftermath, including social media harassment triggered by the driver's misleading posts about the incident, have impacted her deeply. "Pulling over on the expressway with cars speeding by, telling me to get out with my bags—it’s not a reasonable request," Turner recounted, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Concerns about her safety and that of her daughter's were also mentioned, causing her to reconsider their attendance at games due to potential threats.
On the other hand, Smith provided her own account of the incident, claiming self-defense after alleging Turner pulled out a sharp object. Revealing a bite mark and eye injuries needing stitches, Smith stated to 11Alive, "I would never attack any passenger who has ever gotten into my car. I just wanted her to get out of the car." A warrant for Smith's arrest has been issued while Turner's attorney, Miguel Dominguez, has announced plans to file a class-action lawsuit against Uber for the incident.
