According to a social media post by the Saint Paul Police Department, Officers Cruz and Foy were alerted of a fire at 520 Rice Street by bystanders, their actions potentially averting a much grimmer outcome on that sunny morning.
The social media update details how Officer Cruz, upon being flagged down, did not balk, immediately calling in the fire and rushing into the smoldering structure, his sense of duty eclipsing the instinct for self-preservation. Officer Foy was quick to follow suit, and together, with the assistance of the Saint Paul Fire Department, they were able to ensure the safe evacuation of all residents. "Everyone made it out of the building without significant injuries," proclaimed the department's post.
The officers were later treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation.
