In a high-stakes pursuit that could have turned disastrous, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) officers managed to apprehend a suspect firing upon a tow truck driver and later, police, without any community or police injuries reported. The SLCPD released information about the incident, which occurred late Sunday night and spilled into the early hours of Monday.

According to SLCPD, around 10:45 p.m. on June 29, a tow truck driver faced multiple gunshots from a 44-year-old man who later fled the scene, continuing to shoot as he drove away. Searching for the assailant, police officers found and tried to stop his vehicle, receiving bullets in return, which resulted in at least three patrol cars taking damage while being shot at from the suspect's car during the pursuit.

Finally, officers performed a PIT maneuver near North Temple Street on I-80, halting the suspect's vehicle and safely taking him into custody. The wounded man was transported to the hospital and remains in critical condition under police watch. Police Chief Brian Redd praised his officers for their swift action, stating, "It is remarkable that none of our officers or community members were hurt during this dangerous incident," in what is almost a miracle. "Their response was courageous and focused on protecting our community," as detailed by SLCPD.

The mayhem resulted in several road closures, including I-80 and Bangerter Highway. With traffic interruptions expected, community members and media can stay updated via the Utah Department of Transportation’s website for road reopening statuses. The incident prompted the standard OICI protocol, where the West Jordan Police Department leads Team 4 in the investigation. The involved officers and sergeants have been placed on paid administrative leave, following procedure, while the city ordinance stipulates that body-worn camera footage be released within ten business days following such an event.
