Part of an elite 15% of cities to receive top honors among nearly 1,000 global contenders in 2024, San Diego stands out with its third consecutive A-listing, according to the City of San Diego. This accolade shows the city's dedication to reducing carbon emissions and safeguarding its infrastructure and residents against environmental threats.
The City of San Diego quotes City Planning Director Heidi Vonblum, "This honor shows that San Diego is committed to reducing climate risk and creating a safe, healthy and enjoyable future." The city's strategy is to weave climate action and resilience into the fabric of its daily governance, aligning with its land use, transportation, and environmental guidelines to champion sustainable living for future generations.
San Diego's trailblazing initiatives underpinning its A-list status span several bold plans, such as the Climate Action Plan, Mobility Master Plan, Bicycle Master Plan, and Coastal Resilience Master Plan. A noteworthy effort is the city’s installation of electric vehicle chargers throughout the landscape. Critical measures combating sea level rise, flooding, heatwaves, and wildfires form the crux of the City's Climate Resilient SD Plan.
With 83% of cities worldwide staring down the barrel of significant climate challenges, it's a race against time to mitigate threats posed by floods, heatwaves, wildfires, and drought.
