Big news for the South of Market (SoMa) area as the Gene Friend Recreation Center's renovation hits a significant stride. The topping out ceremony celebrated the last structural beam hoisted into place, signaling that the core of the new facility stands tall and ready for what's to come. According to the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, this key phase lays the foundation to unveil a vibrant space that serves the neighborhood's diverse community.
The overhaul aims to dramatically improve a 45-year-old hub, morphing it into a cornerstone for children, families, and seniors in SoMa. The finished product will feature new amenities, including dual basketball courts, a stylish Harriet Street lobby, and multipurpose rooms. This transformation is not just about building a fancy gym. It's meant to strengthen the local fabric with spaces for interaction, recreation, and growth. Phil Ginsburg, the General Manager of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, described the milestone as a powerful symbol of community resilience, shared vision, and strong partnerships.
Shovels first hit the ground in February 2024 for this ambitious $59 million project, which is ticking along and expected to wrap up in mid-2026. The center's blueprint includes indoor enhancements and an outdoor revamp, featuring a fresh playground and a spot for picnickers to bask in the San Francisco drizzle. In a statement obtained by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, San Francisco Public Works Director Carla Short remarked on the center's importance, saying, "With more space and modern amenities, the reimagined space will better serve the multi-generational community of the South of Market neighborhood."
